Our HSEQ team has been doling out some much needed TLC to support YHA Holmbury St Mary Surrey Hills.
This secluded hostel stands in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the very edge of 4,000 acres of open access countryside and woodland. The Youth Hostel has large grounds and is perfect for playing, relaxing, dining and camping. It’s also ideally suited as a base to explore the Surrey Hills or walk the North Downs Way and Greensand Way.
The hostel needed help to maintain its bike shed, and our team was ready and willing to pitch in.
The relationship with YHA came about through team member Bernie, who joined colleagues Phill, Kelly, Matt and Talia to clear vegetation and apply wood preservative to the structure earlier this month.
The team used their annual volunteering days entitlement to spend time helping the charity, and enjoyed the chance to do something very different to their day jobs.
Business improvement coordinator Talia told us how the group enjoyed working outside for the day and appreciated a warm lunch of pizza and chocolate cake, provided by hostel manager Dan.
Special mention should go to Phill, Head of HSEQ, who covered hundreds more steps than during his usual day at work – no need for a gym visit when your work has been so active.
The team arrived bright, early and keen – Bernie even stayed overnight to ensure he was there and ready first thing.
The weather was kind too, staying dry and mild, which made for a pleasant day working outside.
“It was great to have an opportunity to help support the YHA and the work that they do. The location and facilities there are beautiful – and the day was fun, and rewarding.”
The YHA, who were very impressed with the results of our team’s work, are keen to make the cycle shed secure. It’s hoped that HSEQ will have the opportunity to return: cleaning the roof and improving the shed’s security is on their list.
A little more about YHA
As we’re a charity, all the money we make goes straight back into keeping hostels beautiful, prices affordable and into enhancing the lives of young people. Whether as a paid employee, volunteer or customer, you’re helping us create unique opportunities for all, especially young people, to explore, discover and grow in the great outdoors. Everything we do is in the spirit and in the service of our Charitable Object.
Our aim is to help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities, particularly by providing Youth Hostels or other accommodation for them in their travels, and thus to promote their health, recreation and education.
